One of the great things about the Internet is the fact that it can act like a giant universal “water cooler,” a place where you can ask questions and get answers from millions of people all over the world.
Reading questions and answers online is easy. If you can use a keyboard and a mouse, you can put a question out there for people the world around to answer. Here’s a quick guide to asking questions and getting answers on the Internet.
1. Find a Community You Trust
Obviously, the fact that anyone can access the Internet pretty much at any time means you’re likely to run into people who give bad advice. Intentionally or not, people often spread bad information online. Finding a group of people, a message board, or a forum that you like and that you can trust is the first step toward getting valid answers to your online questions.
2. Use Proper Grammar
Since your only way to interface with people online is using language, presenting your question properly is a huge factor in getting good advice. Spell-check your writing and do your best to use good grammar. Not only is it polite, but it will attract more attention that way.
3. Get a Second Opinion
Never trust the first answer your get online. In fact, you should always run the answer you get by at least one other source. You wouldn’t trust a stranger on the street right off the bat, and you shouldn’t trust an anonymous online poster right away either.
