Is Nicotine Gum Healthy?
Nicotine gum is one of several methods used by smokers to quit smoking. When a cigarette smoker feels an urge to light up, they are supposed to chew on a piece of gum instead. The dose of nicotine gives them their fix, letting them set their mind to other tasks.
There are many brands of nicotine gum, including the most popular brand in the USA, Nicorette or Nicoderm. Nicorette was designed by a Swedish firm and is the original nicotine alternative treatment.
Is Nicotine Gum Healthy?
Products like Nicoderm are a far sight better than smoking two packs a day or dipping Skoal. That doesn’t mean ingesting large amounts of nicotine is healthy. Nicotine restricts the arteries, so chewing the gum is still going to lead to hypertension, because it’s harder to pump blood through your body.
On the other hand, nicotine gum eliminates having smoke circulate through your lungs, so it lowers risk of lung disease and a variety of breathing-related health conditions. For those who use smokeless tobaccos, you aren’t placing toxins in your mouth for large stretches of the day, so nicotine gum may lower your chances of mouth cancer, though chewing nicotine gum does increase your risk of gum disease, because of less blood circulation around your mouth.
So nicotine gum is a good intermediate step and a positive move away from smoking or dipping, but you want to use it to eventually become nicotine-free.
