Movies with Guardian Angels
Whenever a movie mortal gets into trouble, there’s always the possibility that they’ll be saved by the intervention of a friend from above. I’m talking about guardian angels, winged protectors who have nothing better to do than protect hapless humans from death and heartache. If you’re unfamiliar with the genre, the following films are a good place to start.
City of Angels (1998) – Nicolas Cage stars as an angel who falls in love with a dedicated doctor played by Meg Ryan. Will he continue to observe her in silence, or will he risk his immortality for a chance at love? If you like happy endings, you may want to stay away from this one.
Wings of Desire (1987) – The German film that inspired City of Angels, it stars Bruno Ganz as an angel who gives up his angelic life in order to be with a trapeze artist. A sequel would follow.
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) – A small-town banker (Jimmy Stewart) contemplates suicide, but he’s rescued by his guardian angel and shown the impact he’s made on the world around him. A perennial favorite during the holiday season.
Angels in the Outfield (1951) – When her favorite baseball team finds itself in last place, an orphan girl prays for help. She gets it in the form of several angels who were once professional ballplayers themselves. Co-starring Janet Leigh and her sexy body.
The Preacher’s Wife (1996) – An inner-city preacher (Courtney B. Vance) prays to God for help and receives a visit from an angel (Denzel Washington). Whitney Houston co-stars, and Lionel Richie also makes an appearance.
Always (1989) – When he dies in a plane crash, a pilot (Richard Dreyfuss) watches over his wife (Holly Hunter) and her new boyfriend. John Goodman steals the show as the dead man’s best friend. Directed by Steven Spielberg.
All the Days Before Tomorrow (2007) – As a pair of best friends (Joey Kern and Alexandra Holden) look back on their relationship, the guy’s guardian angel (Richard Roundtree) offers him advice on the future. The next time you decide to jump in a river or join a losing baseball team, just remember that your guardian angel may pop in to pick up the slack. And if you’re a female, don’t be surprised if they wind up falling in love with you.
