Two Letter Scrabble Words
Two Letter Scrabble Words
My husband is a Scrabble phenom. His Scrabble skills put him just this side of entering full-fledged Scrabble tournaments. If you know any Scrabble fiends, you know that my husband’s obsession with Scrabble has turned into a family obsession. Like it or not, we all sit down to humor him and play Scrabble twice a week. I’ve learned that after a certain point, improving my Scrabble skills means memorizing lists of words.
There are 97 legal two letter words in Scrabble, each one capable of turning the tide of the game. If you’re dealt a poor rack of tiles, playing a legal two letter word can clear up just enough rack space to change your luck. For example–playing “WO” on a triple word score square earns you a quick 15 points and frees up some rack space while leaving the door open for additional plays.
Once my Scrabble game improved, my husband decided to make our family games a little more “interesting” by including a wager. Whoever loses the most games in a given month has to buy the winner a prize of their choosing. As a calligrapher, I’ve had my eye on a set of fancy JetPens for a few months now. Beating my husband in Scrabble is about the only way I’d ever get my hands on those pens, so I started memorizing two letter Scrabble word lists.
I found the list of all 97 legal two letter Scrabble words and set about committing them to memory. I used every trick in the book–creating mnemonic sentences, setting the words to music (specifically, the Major-General’s Song from The Pirates of Penzance) and even using flash cards when my husband wasn’t around. I was bound and determined to use those little two letter words as a wedge against his superior Scrabble skills.
Just this past weekend, my hard work paid off. The first two weeks of Scrabble games were split 50-50, but as my familiarity with two letter words grew, so did my win totals. How did it all end? Let’s just say, I caught hubby looking up JetPens Coupons 2011 on Google. Victory was mine.
